Health Insurance, Competition, and the American Way

Congress: We have decreed that all US citizens must purchase Government approved Health Insurance.

Citizen: Er … Is that even constitutional?

Congress: What a ridiculous question!! You can’t be serious!!

Citizen: No, I’m serious. What part of the enumerated powers in the constitution gives you the power to do that?

Congress: Well, it’s the Interstate Commerce Clause. That allows us to do pretty much anything we want.

Citizen: Interstate … That means between states, right?

Congress: Yes, that is correct.

Citizen: So why don’t you allow Insurance to be sold across State lines? Wouldn’t that create the competition you claim to desire?

Congress: .
